Joey’s Happy Tail: From Puppy Mill Survivor to Family Pet
Joey’s Happy Tail
The first photo of Joey is hard to look at—but it’s important. Images like his are critical to raising awareness about the horrors of puppy mills.
If you purchase a puppy at a flea market, swap meet, or through an online ad without demanding to see the breeder’s facility, there’s a high chance you’re supporting this abuse. Dogs like Joey are often kept in filthy cages, covered in sores from neglect. Many have never known a kind human touch. They are underfed, denied medical care, and treated as nothing more than tools for profit.
Joey was one of the “lucky” ones. When he became too sick and malnourished to be useful as a stud, he was discarded—surrendered to a shelter. That shelter contacted DARS, and we took him in immediately. We began the slow, gentle process of healing both his body and his trust. With proper medical care, food, and—most importantly—love, Joey began to recover.
Now named Joey, he has a forever family that patiently taught him that people can be kind. He gets to play with his furry siblings, rest in a clean, safe home, and receive affection anytime he wants. He is no longer a number in a cage—he is cherished.
