Jack’s Happy Tail

Some rescue stories change more than just one life—they spark a movement that helps countless others. Jack’s story is one of transformation, compassion, and a legacy of hope for homeless pets across DeSoto County.

Jack, a gentle black boxer mix, was discovered in desperate shape—emaciated and weak, wandering the grounds of Bonne Terre Country Inn in Nesbit. His rescuer, Emily Rygg, couldn’t ignore the suffering of the poor pup at her doorstep. She stepped in without hesitation, giving Jack shelter and the first taste of safety he’d known in a long time.

But Jack needed more than a roof and a meal. Emily contacted DARS, determined to find him a family who would provide the lasting love and care he deserved. With time, patience, and plenty of support from both Bonne Terre and DARS, Jack’s health improved. The once-starving stray blossomed into a happy, affectionate companion.

Before long, Jack found his forever home with Nancy—a loving, responsible adopter who saw past his tough beginnings to the loyal heart beneath. Jack’s journey from despair to comfort is one to celebrate, but Emily’s commitment didn’t end there.

Inspired by Jack, Emily founded “The Furry Affair at Bonne Terre”—an annual fundraiser dedicated to supporting DARS’s rescue work. The event is a joyful gathering of animal lovers, adopters, and advocates, all united by Jack’s story and the desire to give more pets a second chance. Proceeds from the Furry Affair help DARS rescue, heal, and rehome dogs and cats just like Jack, year after year.

Jack isn’t just a happy tail—he’s the heart behind a growing movement of hope and generosity, proving that one rescue can truly change the world.
