"Although it may be difficult, the best action to take is to leave wildlife alone. Often, young animals that might appear to be orphaned may be picked up by an attending adult if they are simply left alone.
The MDWFP does not have the capacity to conduct general wildlife rehabilitation and cannot pick up injured wildlife (except in the case of some threatened/endangered species). Private entities or individuals must apply for and be permitted to perform wildlife rehabilitation work.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks under the authority of Section 49-5-107, Mississippi Code of 1972, adopted regulations pertaining to captive-held game species and furbearers (Public Notice 2877) and non-game species in need of management (Public Notice M4-3201)"

"Injured or orphaned game or furbearing animals may be kept temporarily in captivity for the purpose of rehabilitation for release into the wild, only under a permit issued by MDWFP. Raptors, migratory birds, and federally protected species require both a state permit issued by MDWFP, and federal permit issued by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
A list of state/federally permitted rehabilitators can be found at: www.rehabers.org/
Permits will only be issued to persons who comply with all criteria listed in the application. We strongly suggest that persons interested in rehabilitation of wild animals join one of the rehabilitation organizations in the state (listed at the address above). Please note that a wildlife rehabilitation permit does not give the permittee permission to keep native wildlife as pets. All rehabilitation facilities are subject to inspection by MDWFP personnel.
FIND A REHAB FACILITY: If you must get an injured animal to a wildlife rehabilitator, contact our Jackson Office at 601-432-2199 during business hours for wildlife rehabilitation contacts or visit http://www.rehabers.org/" or call 877-WILD-HELP (877-945-3435)

Mississippi Wildlife Rehabilitation, Inc. was formed in 1995 to meet the increasing need for wildlife assistance. Each year, hundreds of injured and orphaned wild birds and mammals are received by MWR, Inc. licensed rehabilitators. The techniques used to care for theses animals maximize their chances for survival when they are released to their natural habitat. The Director, Valery Smith, has over twenty years' experience in wildlife rehabilitation & Education. Wildlife rehabilitation is the care of the injured or orphaned animals with the specific goal of returning them to their native habitat. This involves emergency care, long-term rehabilitation and physical/mental conditioning for release back to the wild. It is a humane and rewarding endeavor which benefits both wildlife and people. By caring for individual animals, volunteers at MWR are gathering information that is relevant to entire species which gives all of us a better understanding of how these wonderful creatures relate to our world. MWR is State and Federally licensed by the MS. Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). MWR, Inc. is now entering a new challenge, building a nature center in Desoto county! The first phase of this project is raising $500,000 to build an Education/Rehabilitation building on 154 acres of natural habitat the US Army Corps of Engineers at Arkabutla Lake awarded MWR, Inc. in 2007. Partnering with the Desoto County Greenways shortly after this award has allowed MWR, Inc. to put in 3 miles of walking trails, signage, bridges over low lying areas and a stage area to present wildlife programs. We look forward to the future and are actively soliciting more partners for this very worthwhile endeavor! Please join us in helping us to build a facility we all can be proud of so children and adults alike can benefit.
